Mainstream media and the communications sector are still largely male-dominated in management, ownership and representation. Women hold only 3 percent of leadership positions in the sector. And despite the parity of female and male graduates from journalism schools in the U.S., women reporters on average make $9,000 less per year than their male cohorts. New media and the internet are offering new opportunities for women’s involvement, with an estimated 7.3 million more women online than men and 23 million women who use blogs, including the emerging “momosphere,” or moms who blog. A vibrant feminist media is building alliances to combat sexism and amplify voices and critical viewpoints. Initiatives from our network, such as SheSource and the Women’s Media Center, are aiming to address the absence of women as experts and opinion leaders in the public sphere.

Keeping Score When It Counts

 The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport, at the University of Central Florida releases its “Keeping Score When It Counts" series periodically. It documents comprehensive analysis of statistics involving the graduation rates of Division I collegiate athletic teams in selected sports.

In 2012, the study of graduation rates for teams in the women’s college basketball championship tournament found higher numbers than those in the men’s event and a smaller disparity between white and black players.

Women and Social Media in 2012

 BlogHer has been conducting studies about women and their social media habits for the past five consecutive years. Each year we look at emerging media platforms and measure the purpose, trust and influence levels for blogs and other social media channels.

Methodology:

The 2012 study was fielded across BlogHer's network (37+ million unique visitors) and 3,000 blogs. For the sake of comparison, the survey was also fielded to a total U.S. online general population on a panel provided by Vision Critical. There were a total of 2,071 women included in the combined BlogHer and U.S. samples.

Women across generations: expectations and aspirations

 Almost every week there is a new headline about women’s position in society: on unemployment, parenting, women having or not having ‘it all’, the gender pay gap, and women’s representation in politics and on company boards.

And while there has certainly been progress for many women in the UK – as shown by more women entering the workforce and gaining educational qualifications – persistent challenges such as the pay gap and under-representation in many areas of society remain. This, alongside dynamic social and demographic trends, highlights the diversity of families in today’s society.
