February 14, 2013 marks the 15th Anniversary of V-Day and around the country, women and men will come together to raise awareness for the One Billion Rising campaign. This campaign is a single-day of global action, calling on people around the world to “Strike! Dance! Rise!” in order to bring awareness to the estimated one in three women who will experience rape or violence in her lifetime . Events around the country are set to spread this message of solidarity through dance, protest, and activism. The campaign calls these events “[…acts] of solidarity, demonstrating to women the commonality of their struggles and their power in numbers.”
One Billion Rising is unique in that it uses dance and flash mobs to “shake the world into a new consciousness.” By dancing, the campaign says, they are able to occupy space and bring attention to the cause of ending violence against women. “It’s dangerous,” the campaign writes, “joyous, sexual, holy, disruptive. It breaks the rules. It can happen anywhere at anytime with anyone and everyone. It’s free.”
