THE DRESSMAKER OF KHAIR KHANA
FIVE SISTERS, ONE REMARKABLE FAMILY, AND THE WOMAN WHO RISKED EVERYTHING TO KEEP THEM SAFE
In The Dressmaker of Khair Khana, journalist and author Gayle Tzemach Lemmon tells the story of Kamela Sediqi, the unlikely breadwinner who became an entrepreneur in Afghanistan under the Taliban. Desperate to support her brothers and sisters and unable to earn a living outside the home, she started a dressmaking business in her living room which offered work to 100 women in her community. Together these unsung heroines made the difference between survival and starvation for their families under Taliban rule.
Gayle Tzemach Lemmon worked as a journalist for nearly 10 years covering presidential politics and as a producer with the ABC News Political Unit and This Week with George Stephanopoulos. In 2004 she left ABC News to earn her MBA at Harvard, where she began writing about women entrepreneurs in war zones including Afghanistan, Bosnia, and Rwanda. Her reporting on entrepreneurs in these countries has been published by The New York Times, Financial Times, International Herald Tribune, Christian Science Monitor, CNN.com, and the Daily Beast, as well as The World Bank and Harvard Business School. She has also written from Afghanistan for NPR and the Huffington Post. She has served as a Fulbright Scholar in Spain and a Robert Bosch Fellow in Germany. She speaks German, Spanish, French, and basic Dari, and lives in Los Angeles, CA, where she has spent the last several years working at the investment manager PIMCO and recently joined the Council on Foreign Relations as a Fellow and Deputy Director of their Women and Foreign Policy Program.
